Negative taken of Mary E. Thomas, who was the first black graduate in Home Economics at Southland College in Helena, Phillips County, Arkansas. She later did lace embroidery as a certified seamstress in Helena. Southland College started as an orphanage for African American children in 1864 that evolved into a school two years later. The curriculum expanded in 1869 and the school was renamed to Southland College. Due to financial difficulties, the Southland College closed in 1925.
